The ? icon gives you more information about a link. If you have a Web Browser that is Java-enabled, it will open an additional window with the following information.

This link takes you to a picture of an apple which is meant to represent the earth. Why an apple? Because the depth of the Earth's atmosphere is about the same proportion as the thickness of the skin of an apple!

Other stuff you need to know about the atmosphere:

  • the Troposphere--up to 6 miles of the atmosphere
  • the Stratosphere--up to 31 miles of the atmosphere
  • the Mesosphere--up to 50 miles of the atmosphere
  • the Thermosphere--up to 600 miles of the atmosphere
