Try This

Bird Feeder

What it does

Attract birds to your yard or patio with a homemade bird feeder.

Note: For best results, read all of the following instructions before starting this project.

What you need

  • one-gallon plastic milk jug
  • scissors
  • wooden dowel rod, at least 4 inches longer than the width of the jug
  • large nail
  • about 2 feet of thin wire
  • birdseed

What to do

  1. Wash the milk jug thoroughly and replace the cap.
  2. Cut large holes (3 to 4 inches in diameter) on opposite sides of the jug, directly across from each other and opposite the handle. Cut the holes high enough so the seed won't spill out when you put it in.
  3. Using the nail, punch a smaller hole below each of the large holes.
  4. Insert the dowel through the nail holes, so that it extends about 2 inches from either side of the jug. The birds will use the dowel for perching.
  5. Use the nail to punch two holes in the neck of the jug about one inch below the cap.
  6. Run the wire through the holes, twisting it tightly above the cap.
  7. Fill the feeder with birdseed and hang it with the wire. Be sure it's out of reach of neighborhood cats!

Remember, be sure you have a parent, teacher, or other adult help you!
